Israeli biotech startup Starget Pharma secures $18m series A
Israeli biotech startup Starget Pharma has secured US$18 million in a series A funding round led by Ilex Medical and US investors, including Louisiana Growth Fund and Cancer Focus Fund BRF.
The funding will support human trials, US expansion, and a new collaboration with the Center for Molecular Imaging and Therapy in Louisiana.
Founded in 2019 and based in Ness Ziona, the company develops radiopharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis and targeted treatment.
It plans to start advanced clinical trials this year with MD Anderson Cancer Center for treatments of sarcoma, skin cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors.
Starget’s approach combines diagnostic and therapeutic isotopes on the same molecular platform to improve precision and minimize damage to healthy tissue.
Starget has raised US$38 million to date and employs 20 staff members.

Starget’s funding ties to an AI-powered drug design platform
- Starget built an AI-driven drug design system called Backbone Dynamics 1.
- Backbone Dynamics uses proprietary backbone cyclization, a method that “locks” a peptide into a more rigid shape, to improve peptide radioligands’ stability, selectivity, and pharmacokinetics (how a drug moves through the body) 1.
- Its lead candidate, DOTA-PTR-58, targets somatostatin receptor type 3 (SSTR-3). SSTR-3 is highly expressed across tumor types that include sarcoma, melanoma, neuroendocrine tumors (NET), and hepatocellular carcinomas 1.
- Starget says SSTR-3 has lower expression in normal tissues than the more commonly used target SSTR-2, which the company expects could support a broader therapeutic window (a bigger gap between an effective dose and a harmful one) 1.
The deal signals shifts in biotech translation, supply chains, and state investment
- Starget says it will keep in silico (computer-based) AI-driven drug discovery in Israel, while building U.S. translational infrastructure through work with Louisiana’s Center for Molecular Imaging and Therapy (CMIT). Translational infrastructure moves a therapy from lab research into human testing 2.
- It also signed a supply agreement with isotope producer Nusano, a company that manufactures medical isotopes. The agreement is expected to cover isotope needs from discovery through commercialization, including rare alpha particle emitters such as Actinium-225, Astatine-211, and Lead-212 3.
- The Louisiana Growth Fund is a public-private investment vehicle launched by Louisiana Economic Development’s Louisiana Innovation (LA.IO) department to back companies that build long-term economic value in the state 2.
