Intel strategy chief steps down this month

Intel’s chief strategy officer, Safroadu Yeboah-Amankwah, will leave the company on June 30, 2025.

He has held the role since 2020, overseeing growth initiatives, strategic partnerships, and equity investments.

Some of his duties will be transferred to Sachin Katti, now chief technology and AI officer.

Intel Capital will report directly to CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

The announcement comes amid a leadership restructuring under Tan, who became CEO in March.

He has reduced management layers and taken direct control of key business units, including data center, AI, and personal-computer chips.

These changes aim to fix years of manufacturing setbacks and missed chances in mobile and AI.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Intel’s historical pattern of strategic pivots follows leadership changes

Intel’s current reorganization under Lip-Bu Tan reflects a historical pattern in the company’s strategy when facing market challenges.

In the early 1980s, Intel made a strategic pivot from memory chips to microprocessors under Andy Grove’s leadership when Japanese manufacturers threatened their DRAM business 1.

This shift, which involved difficult decisions about resource allocation and organizational focus, positioned Intel for decades of dominance in the PC era 2.

The current leadership restructuring, with Tan taking direct oversight of data center and PC chip groups while elevating Sachin Katti to oversee strategy functions, suggests a potential strategic inflection point as Intel addresses manufacturing challenges and missed opportunities in mobile and AI chips.

Intel’s annual net loss of $18.8 billion in 2024—its first since 1986—highlights the severity of its current challenges and explains why Tan is cutting what he views as a “bloated, slow-moving middle-management layer.”
