Intel spinout RealSense nets $50m for AI, robotics
RealSense, a company focused on AI-driven computer vision, has completed a $50 million series A funding round, as it spun out from Intel Corporation.
The funding was led by a private equity firm specializing in semiconductors, with contributions from Intel Capital and the MediaTek Innovation Fund.
RealSense plans to use the funds to expand in robotics, biometrics, and AI-powered vision technologies. It intends to expand its team to include more AI, software, and robotics engineers to support product development.
The company will continue to offer its current product lineup, including RealSense depth cameras, which are embedded in 60% of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and humanoid robots globally, according to the firm.
The company, based in Santa Clara in California, serves over 3,000 customers worldwide and holds more than 80 patents.
This spinout coincides with rapid growth in the robotics sector, as the global robotics market is projected to grow from US$50 billion to over US$200 billion within six years.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Corporate spinouts accelerate innovation in specialized tech markets
RealSense’s successful spinout from Intel follows a proven model that allows specialized technology divisions to move faster in rapidly evolving markets.
The process mirrors successful university spinouts where independence enables faster commercialization and innovation compared to remaining within parent organizations 1.
RealSense secured substantial funding ($50 million) immediately after spinning out, demonstrating investor confidence in the standalone business model and its growth potential.
This corporate spinout strategy allows RealSense to focus exclusively on computer vision and robotics applications rather than competing for resources within Intel’s broader portfolio.
The inclusion of Intel Capital as an investor after the spinout follows a common pattern where parent companies maintain strategic relationships while allowing the new entity operational freedom 2.
2️⃣ Depth perception technology positioned at convergence of multiple high-growth markets
RealSense’s 3D perception technology sits at the intersection of several high-growth markets, with the global robotics sector projected to grow from $64.8 billion to $375.82 billion by 2035 3.
