Instacart buys Instaleap to grow retail tech abroad

Instacart has acquired Bogota-based Instaleap as it expands its business outside the US.

Instaleap provides technology and fulfillment services to almost 100 grocery retailers across nearly 30 countries in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

The deal extends Instacart’s push into international markets through retailer technology rather than its consumer-facing products, following its software partnership with Costco in Europe.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Instacart buys a ready-made international footprint, not just a startup

  • Instacart is acquiring Instaleap, a technology partner to Walmart, Carrefour, and 7-Eleven 1.
  • Instaleap already runs in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, with more than 25 million transactions processed worldwide 1.
  • Instaleap provides logistics and ecommerce orchestration software that coordinates online orders, in-store picking, and delivery across sales channels 1.
  • Instaleap says retailers using the platform have cut picking time by 50% and reduced logistics costs by up to 30% 1.
  • The purchase gives Instacart operational know-how plus a retailer customer base in several international markets 1.

The grocery tech arms race is now about enterprise software, not gig workers

  • Instacart is pushing beyond the U.S. by selling retailer technology instead of leaning on consumer-facing products.
  • A recent deal supports Costco same-day delivery websites in France and Spain, and it keeps expansion capital-light by selling software plus fulfillment services instead of running its own fleet 2.
  • The combined offering raises the bar for smaller grocery tech providers that sell narrower tools.
  • Instacart’s enterprise ecommerce platform supports more than 380 grocery ecommerce sites, and it now pairs with Instaleap software that manages store, pickup, and delivery workflows 3.
