Indonesian fisheries startup Aruna cuts 40% of jobs

Indonesian fisheries startup Aruna has confirmed layoffs affecting a significant portion of its workforce.

Reports from DealStreetAsia indicate that the layoffs, which began in December 2024 and continued into January 2025, impacted approximately 40% of the company’s total employees.

While specific numbers of layoffs were not disclosed, Aruna said the downsizing was part of a strategic restructuring effort.

“Aruna has made the difficult decision to adjust its workforce as part of a strategic restructuring,” said Farid Naufal Aslam, the company’s co-founder and CEO, in a press release dated Mar. 1.

The company cited the need for long-term sustainability in the face of challenges within the fisheries and agribusiness sectors.

Aslam noted that these difficulties have affected investor sentiment and access to funding, although he did not provide details on the specific challenges faced.
