Indian startup funding jumps 110% to $1.4b in February

AI infrastructure startup Neysa’s US$600 million fundraise lifted total venture capital into Indian startups to US$1.4 billion in February, up 110% year-on-year, YourStory Research said.

The figure was up 52% from January’s US$927 million, and without Neysa the month’s funding would have been about US$800-900 million.

There were no other US$100 million deals in February; the largest non-Neysa rounds were Drivn at US$80 million, Temple at US$54 million, IDfy at US$53 million, and The Whole Truth at US$51 million.

Early-stage deals had the highest number of rounds, while growth-stage funding attracted the largest share of capital, and debt funding stood at US$83 million.

AI-led sector funding was strongest, followed by cleantech and direct-to-consumer (D2C), with fintech ranking fourth, and Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi-NCR together cornered more than 90% of the funding.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Blackstone’s $600 million bet is on India’s AI infrastructure gap

  • The reported $600 million raise is an equity investment of up to $600 million led by Blackstone Inc. It sits within a planned $1.2 billion package, with Neysa aiming to line up another $600 million in debt subject to documentation 1.
  • The funding is set aside for more than 20,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), chips used to train and run AI models, to be deployed in India 1.
  • Blackstone sees room for rapid buildout, estimating India has fewer than 60,000 GPUs today and could expand that base by nearly 30 times in coming years 2.
  • The deal fits Blackstone’s approach of backing the underlying tools for AI, including prior bets on data center operator QTS and AI cloud provider CoreWeave 1.
  • Neysa, founded in 2023, now carries an enterprise value of $1.4 billion as investors focus on specialized AI infrastructure 3.

India’s push for sovereign AI is creating a new class of infrastructure giants

  • Neysa’s round stands out in an Indian venture market where investors have been more selective, concentrating large checks into a small set of infrastructure plays 4.
  • The agreement tracks a wider sovereign AI push as countries build domestic compute to protect data and compete economically. Neysa says its plans align with India’s national IndiaAI Mission 1.
  • Sharing the news at the India AI Impact Summit underlined India’s aim to play a larger role in global AI, beyond buying overseas services 5.
  • The plan may sharpen rivalry among “neo-cloud” providers, newer cloud companies focused on AI computing, as enterprises and government agencies seek in-country data handling 2.
