IBM, Cisco team up to link quantum computers by 2030

IBM and Cisco said they plan to connect quantum computers over long distances, aiming to demonstrate the concept by the end of 2030.

The project will require new technology that does not yet exist and will involve collaboration with universities and federal labs.

Quantum computers are expected to tackle complex problems but are currently error-prone, and making a reliable one remains a challenge.

IBM is targeting an operational quantum machine by 2029, while Cisco earlier this year opened a lab to investigate how to connect quantum machines.

A major hurdle is transforming information in stationary qubits into flying qubits, and then into optical signals that can travel across fiber-optic cables.

Developing the required microwave-optical transducer technology will involve groups such as the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center, led by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago.

IBM and Cisco also plan to publish open-source software to weave all the parts together.
