Hyundai Steel deploys robots to enhance smart manufacturing

Hyundai Steel has deployed robots to automate inspection and packaging processes at its wire rod plant in Dangjin, South Korea.

The company introduced an automated tagging robot that attaches tags with product details to coils on the shipping line.

The system includes assembly and attachment robots, supported by conveyors and safety equipment, to streamline the tagging process.

Hyundai Steel partnered with Italy-based automation firm BM Group Polytec to develop and implement the system, which separates robot work zones from areas accessed by staff.

The company said automation aims to reduce tagging errors and improve workplace safety.

Hyundai Steel also installed a robot in July at its Incheon facility to inspect the size and surface temperature of beam blanks.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hyundai Steel’s automation push tests Korea’s wider robotics adoption

  • Automation on Hyundai Steel’s wire rod and beam blank lines aligns with South Korea’s plan to lift automation to 30% by 2025, supported by the Korean New Deal (a stimulus for green and digital upgrades) investing about USD 160 billion 1.
  • The company targets inspection and packaging to avoid long, risky builds. In 2024, 68% of manufacturers postponed automation because of cash-flow strain and integration complexity 2. Smaller modular deployments (self-contained projects) cut hurdles.
  • 41% of Korea’s manufacturing workforce is 50 plus 2. Automating heavy tasks like tagging, inspection eases the aging labor gap and supports an 8.9% CAGR in industrial robotics 1.

South Korea’s industrial robotics market may reach USD 1.87 billion by 2033

  • Market size could rise from USD 894.97 million in 2024 to USD 1,874.65 million by 2033 1. Handling robots, like Hyundai Steel’s tagging system, lead material processing and logistics.
  • A USD 5.8 billion Hyundai Steel mill in Louisiana will produce 2.7 million metric tons a year from 2029 3. Vendors can port Korea-proven automation to U.S. lines. That opens a market for inspection plus logistics systems for systems integrators (firms that design and install automation).
  • Specialists in machine vision for surface inspection can partner with collaborative safety system providers (sensors and controls that let robots work safely near people). Korea has limited operational technology and information technology (OT-IT) integration talent 2. Turnkey solutions (ready-to-deploy packages) help counter the causes behind the 68% project deferral rate among manufacturers.
