Huawei signs bank tech deal with Vietnam’s SHB

Vietnamese lender SHB signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei to build technology architecture and data platforms for the bank, expanding Huawei’s presence in Vietnam.

SHB said Huawei will help support stable and safe operations at the bank.

The Vietnam Banks Association says Huawei also works with SCB, SeABank, and Home Credit on security, data analytics, cloud computing, and banking systems.

Huawei won contracts in 2025 to build parts of Vietnam’s 5G network, after Hanoi kept Chinese companies out of that infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Huawei offers a wider banking stack through software, cloud tools, and partners

  • The agreement gives SHB access to Huawei tools for updating older banking systems, including its Digital CORE Solution, GaussDB database software, plus container services that let apps run with more flexibility 1.
  • Huawei sells this package with partners such as Temenos, a Switzerland-based banking software company, and Sunline Technology, a China-based banking IT supplier 2, 3.
  • This setup lets banks keep workloads on their own servers or split them across private and public clouds while replacing older systems in stages 2.
  • Huawei also cites work in China with WeBank, a digital-only bank. Huawei materials say WeBank serves more than 400 million retail customers with an annual operating cost of US$0.30 per account 4.

Vietnam’s security rules open room for infrastructure providers with resilience tools

  • Vietnam is tightening mobile banking security rules. Banking apps must stop working on devices judged insecure, including rooted or jailbroken phones, unsafe operating environments, or compromised app installs 5.
  • Those rules raise the value of security and uptime tools, including disaster recovery plus fault detection and testing frameworks that Huawei Cloud has discussed publicly 4, 3.
  • The partnership also gives Huawei a path into sensitive sectors through the technology layer beneath banking software 2.
  • That role may help Huawei expand in markets that have been cautious about letting it into critical infrastructure such as 5G 2.
