Huawei joins 11 Chinese carmakers to boost assisted driving safety
Huawei’s automotive unit has recruited 11 Chinese carmakers, including Audi China, SAIC Motor, and Guangzhou Automobile Group, to join a non-binding intelligent driving safety initiative.
The initiative promotes more investment in research, transparent marketing, user education, and industry standards for assisted driving systems.
It was announced amid growing safety concerns in China’s EV sector, following a fatal accident involving a Xiaomi EV, which is not part of the initiative.
Huawei also suggested creating a “safety training camp” to teach users how to properly use assisted driving systems.
These moves reflect Huawei’s ambition to lead in China’s fast-growing autonomous driving market.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Fatal incidents are driving China’s autonomous vehicle safety push
Huawei’s safety initiative comes in direct response to a series of high-profile autonomous driving accidents in China, most notably the March 2025 Xiaomi SU7 crash that killed three university students.
The Xiaomi vehicle was traveling at 116 km/h with its advanced driving assistance system engaged when it failed to prevent a collision with a concrete barrier, highlighting the real-world risks of these technologies 1.
This incident exposed critical safety gaps: the vehicle lacked lidar sensors for low-light detection and its autonomous emergency braking system failed to activate, raising fundamental questions about system reliability 1.
The timing of Huawei’s initiative reflects a broader industry recognition that advanced driver assistance systems require clearer safety boundaries and better user education to prevent misunderstandings about their capabilities.
Chinese regulators and industry groups have responded swiftly, with the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers emphasizing improved safety designs and warning systems following the incident 2.
2️⃣ The competitive battleground between Chinese firms and Tesla is shifting to safety
Huawei’s safety initiative represents a strategic pivot in how Chinese manufacturers are competing with Tesla, using safety positioning rather than just technological capabilities as a key differentiator.
Huawei’s ADS 3.0 system has already accumulated 1.2 billion kilometers of driving data with over 412,100 active users, establishing a substantial data foundation that the company can leverage for safety improvements 3.
