Hong Kong shares rise as Meituan, pharma stocks gain

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.3% to 26,308.4 on January 12, 2026, supported by gains in tech and pharmaceutical stocks.

The Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 0.7%.

Meituan led tech gains with a 4.2% rise to HK$102. (US$13.1), while Kuaishou Technology increased 4% to HK$77.65 (US$10), and CSPC Pharmaceutical Group added 2.3% to HK$9.39 (US$1.2).

Analysts noted that stronger-than-expected producer and consumer prices in China signaled possible consumer stabilization, but advised caution in interpreting the data.

The trading debut of Chinese AI startup Mini Max, which surged 43% on January 9, 2026, contributed to interest in tech stocks.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Weaker data behind China’s “stronger” inflation prints

  • December CPI and PPI picked up. The 0.8% CPI gain came mostly from fresh vegetables jumping 18.2% on winter supply shortages, rather than broad demand 1.
  • Core inflation, excluding food and energy, stayed at 1.2% year on year 1. Durable goods fell 3.5% from a year earlier 1. Demand remains soft 1.
  • Producer prices fell 1.9% from a year earlier in December 1. That extends a deflation run past three years 1. Carmakers rolled out fresh price cuts as demand stayed weak 1.

Service providers can tap Hong Kong’s Chapter 18C IPO pipeline

  • Mini Max jumped 43% on its first day as Hong Kong led global Initial Public Offering (IPO) totals in 2025 with 106 listings that raised HK$274.6 billion 2. About half of 300 plus pipeline names are biotech and specialist technology firms 3.
  • Investor relations teams can target this pipeline. Public relations with legal advisors can too. Cloud providers with data vendors fit too. Map companies with IPO sponsors (the banks that lead and underwrite Hong Kong listings) headed for 2026 under Chapter 18C rules (Hong Kong’s framework letting certain earlier-stage specialist tech as well as biotech companies list before they are profitable).
  • Clients often are pre-revenue Research and Development (R&D) players in AI, semiconductors, and green tech 3. They need help to meet independent investor requirements while preparing detailed R&D disclosures before and after listing 4.
