HK university robot performs basketball layup using AI
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have demonstrated a 1.3-meter-tall humanoid robot, Unitree G1, performing a real-world basketball layup.
This is the first time a robot has executed basketball moves in a real environment.
The project builds on HKUST’s earlier work using imitation learning and physics-based control to teach robots human-like skills.
The robot’s abilities are powered by SkillMimic-V2, a new method for learning complex, generalizable actions from limited and imperfect demonstration data.
SkillMimic-V2 was accepted for SIGGRAPH 2025 and uses techniques such as Stitched Trajectory Graphs and Adaptive Trajectory Sampling to improve the robot’s skill transition and robustness.
