Harvard endowment invests $116m in Blackrock bitcoin ETF
Harvard Management Company reported a US$116 million stake in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) as of June 30.
The firm oversees Harvard University’s US$50 billion endowment, according to its latest SEC filing.
This is one of the largest known bitcoin allocations by a US university endowment.
IBIT, launched in January 2024, is a spot bitcoin ETF that gives investors exposure to bitcoin without directly holding the asset.
Harvard’s move follows a trend of institutional investors, including hedge funds and pension systems, adding regulated bitcoin ETFs to their holdings.
Total assets in US spot bitcoin ETFs have risen to tens of billions of dollars, supported by both retail and institutional investors.
The ETF structure offers daily liquidity and SEC oversight, helping endowments meet governance and compliance needs. Harvard did not comment further on the investment.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Harvard’s Bitcoin move reflects a strategic escalation, not a sudden shift
Harvard’s $116 million Bitcoin ETF investment represents the latest step in a multi-year cryptocurrency strategy that began much earlier than most people realize.
The university first entered crypto in 2019 when Harvard Management Company invested $11.5 million in Blockstack tokens during an initial coin offering 1. This earlier investment represented less than 0.05% of Harvard’s nearly $40 billion endowment at the time, suggesting a cautious experimental approach 1.
The progression from a small direct token investment to a substantial ETF position shows how Harvard has evolved its crypto strategy as the market matured.
Harvard wasn’t alone in early institutional crypto adoption. For example, Yale had already invested in cryptocurrency-focused venture funds worth $400 million by 2018, including Andreessen Horowitz’s $300 million crypto fund 2.
The current Bitcoin ETF allocation shows Harvard has moved from experimental direct investments to regulated vehicles, indicating increased confidence in crypto as an asset class worthy of meaningful portfolio allocation.
