Global chipmaker STMicro gets $1.2b loan for Italy, France plants

STMicroelectronics has secured a €1 billion (US$1.2 billion) credit line from the European Investment Bank.

The chipmaker will use the first €500 million (US$584 million) to fund research and high-volume chip manufacturing in Italy and France.

About 60% of the funding is allocated to manufacturing facilities in Catania, Agrate, and Crolles, while the remaining 40% will go to R&D.

This marks the ninth financing deal between STMicroelectronics and the EIB, bringing total funding since 1994 to €4.2 billion (US$4.9 billion).

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

STMicroelectronics’ €1B loan overlooks how much chip capacity it adds and when

  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) €1 billion credit line leaves out wafer-per-month increases by site and timing, which blocks a clear read on supply impact.
  • Agrate’s 300 mm fab targets 4,000 wafers per week (wpw) by 2027 1. Headroom stands at 14,000 wpw, and Crolles lines up 14,000 wpw by 2027 with room to 20,000 1.
  • Catania’s Silicon Carbide (SiC) Campus starts 200 mm output in Q4 2025 and targets 15,000 wafers per week at full buildout, though the notice skips when each tranche comes online 12.
  • The €300 million manufacturing allocation lacks a split by technology node, so planners cannot gauge whether Europe gains more sovereignty in power semiconductors or digital chips.

Equipment and materials suppliers can pursue ST’s Italian and French expansion contracts now

  • Suppliers of fab tools and specialty gases can bid now at the three sites. Chemicals, cleanrooms, and factory automation are also in scope for 60% of the first €500 million tranche.
  • ST’s Partner Program is an authorized vendor and design-ecosystem group 3. It lists 300 plus partners, and ST vets applicants that build with ST parts.
  • Agrate ramps smart power and mixed-signal work on Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) processes 12. Crolles centers on digital products, which needs different toolsets.
  • Catania shifts from 150 mm to 200 mm silicon carbide and gallium nitride (GaN)-on-silicon 1. The move lifts demand for wide-bandgap semiconductor tooling and for epitaxy equipment (tools that grow crystalline layers on wafers) as resources shift in 2026 to 2027.
