US geothermal startup Fervo Energy eyes $1.3b IPO
Fervo Energy, a US geothermal power startup, said it plans to raise up to US$1.3 billion in a Nasdaq IPO that could value the company at as much as US$6.5 billion.
The company set a price range of US$21 to US$24 a share and plans to trade under the ticker FRVO, more than double the valuation it was seeking when it confidentially filed with the US SEC earlier in 2026.
Tech companies’ rush to secure electricity for data centers has pushed prices for new natural gas plants up 66% over the past two years.
Fervo said its Cape Station project will generate electricity at about US$7,000 per kilowatt of installed capacity.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Banks backed Fervo’s Cape Station project before its IPO
- Before turning to public investors, Fervo lined up US$421 million in non-recourse debt for Phase 1 of Cape Station in Utah. RBC Capital Markets, the investment banking arm of Royal Bank of Canada, served as financial advisor and a coordinating lead arranger. Barclays, J.P. Morgan, and other banks joined the lending group 1.
- Non-recourse means repayment depends on Cape Station’s cash flow and assets, rather than Fervo’s corporate balance sheet 2.
- The financing moves Cape Station beyond early or bridge funding into long-term project finance. That suggests lenders view it more like an infrastructure asset than a venture-backed technology bet 1.
- The debt followed earlier funding rounds, including a US$462 million series E late-stage private raise that brought in Google as an equity investor 1.
Cape Station aims to beat natural gas on cost
- Fervo says its target is US$3,000 per kilowatt for Cape Station 3.
- At that price, the company says it can compete with natural-gas power generation 3.
- That could create a scalable source of firm, 24/7 carbon-free power. It means electricity available around the clock and helps cover gaps from solar and wind 4.
- An IPO could bring more money into geothermal. Fervo says geothermal supplies less than 1% of annual U.S. electricity, and it estimates more than 42 gigawatts of potential capacity across nearly 600,000 leased acres 3.
