Chinese biotech firm Changchun, US-based Yarrow sign $1.4b deal
Shanghai Scizeng Medical Technology, a unit of Changchun High-Tech Industry, has signed a global licensing deal with US-based Yarrow Bioscience for up to US$1.4 billion.
Yarrow Bioscience will gain exclusive global rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialize GenSci098, an injectable therapy for thyroid eye disease and Graves’ disease, excluding China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
GenSci098 is currently in clinical trials in both China and the US.
Scizeng will receive an upfront payment of US$70 million and could earn up to US$1.4 billion in milestone payments tied to development, regulatory, and commercial targets.
The agreement also includes royalties of over 10% on future sales if the product reaches the market.
Yarrow Bioscience, based in New York, was established by investment firm RTW Investments.
The deal follows recent cross-border partnerships involving Chinese biotech firms and multinational companies.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
GenSci098 lags in a crowded thyroid eye disease race
- GenSci098 is a subcutaneous (under-the-skin) anti–thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) antibody in Phase 1 testing 1. It trails Amgen’s Tepezza, now approved, plus programs from Viridian Therapeutics and Tourmaline Bio 2.
- The deal value could reach US$1.44 billion 3. There is no late-stage efficacy readout, since the ongoing work is a Phase 1 safety and tolerability study in 76 patients 1.
- More than 20 companies pursue 25-plus thyroid eye disease drugs 2. Viridian’s VRDN-003 aims to finish Phase 3 enrollment by September 2025 2. Alumis has US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Fast Track for lonigutamab 2, a program that speeds development.
- Argenx, a biopharmaceutical company, halted its Phase 3 efgartigimod trials in thyroid eye disease (TED) for futility 4. The setback signals high clinical risk even for well-funded programs.
Trial service firms can plan for Yarrow’s US and possible Europe push
- Yarrow needs to move GenSci098 from a 76-patient Phase 1 study 1 to larger Phase 2 then Phase 3 trials across North America with potential Europe sites, to support the up to US$1.44 billion deal 13.
- Patient recruiters with thyroid eye disease experience can start outreach now, since US networks are active at centers running Viridian’s Phase 3 2, batoclimab studies 5, VRDN-003, lonigutamab, and satralizumab 5.
- Health data platforms that track Clinical Activity Scores, a clinician-rated inflammation measure, and proptosis, eye bulging, can give Yarrow patient-finding tools tied to onset within 12 months plus symptom thresholds 1.
