Fintech giants expand services despite stock volatility
The fintech sector is seeing increased convergence as Block, Affirm, and PayPal expand their financial services.
Block, formerly Square, faced challenges in its latest earnings report, missing estimates and seeing its stock drop 18%, the steepest decline in five years.
Despite this, it continues to integrate new services like Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) through its US$29 billion Afterpay acquisition.
Affirm saw a 22% stock surge after exceeding earnings expectations, with a 35% increase in gross merchandise volume to US$10.1 billion and a 47% revenue rise to US$770 million.
Active users grew 23%, while the Affirm Card saw 1.7 million users, up 136% year-over-year.
Meanwhile, PayPal, under CEO Alex Chriss, reported total payment volume of US$437.8 billion, slightly below projections.
It is leveraging Venmo for merchant transactions and enhancing features like Fastlane to compete with Apple Pay and Shop Pay.
All three companies continue to navigate a competitive fintech landscape while managing compliance and tech costs.
