BYD, a Shenzhen-based automaker, reportedly has production costs about one-third lower than competitors in Europe and the US.
In December, BYD’s EV sales topped Tesla’s in Germany and the UK.
Price wars and weaker local demand have pushed Chinese EV makers to expand internationally.
The European Union and China agreed to replace import tariffs on Chinese cars with minimum pricing agreements.
UBS projects Chinese EVs could reach one-third of global market share by 2030 but expects overall volume growth to slow to 15% this year.
