ByteDance valuation tops $600b on proposed equity sale: sources

ByteDance has seen its valuation surge to more than US$600 billion in a proposed sale of about US$900 million worth of shares from a founding shareholder, two people familiar with the matter said.

The seller first pitched a US$550 billion valuation but lifted the target after interest from multiple parties, one person said.

That initial price matched an earlier proposal from General Atlantic, and the person said the deal could still close at a higher valuation.

Talks with several buyers were ongoing, and the sale was not finalised, the second person said.

The planned sale comes after ByteDance weathered political headwinds in a key market.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Investor confidence draws on lower US risk and a steady growth record

  • The January deal that formed TikTok’s US joint venture reduced US political risk that had weighed on the business 1.
  • The joint venture is majority-owned by investors that include Oracle, the US software company; Silver Lake, a private equity firm; and MGX, an investment firm backed by Abu Dhabi. ByteDance retains 19.9%, which eases a regulatory threat that had held down its valuation 2.
  • The latest sale opened with an asking price of US$550 billion. That figure matched a recent proposal from early investor General Atlantic, a large private equity firm 3.
  • The price also builds on earlier transactions, which gives prospective buyers a clearer record of past performance 3.

A mega-valuation sets a benchmark for private markets and public tech rivals

  • ByteDance’s floated valuation of more than US$600 billion sets a benchmark for private-market secondary transactions, where private-company shares are traded. It could also lift return expectations among current shareholders 3.
  • Other richly priced private companies may decide to wait longer before an initial public offering.
  • A valuation at this level gives ByteDance more firepower against public rivals such as Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram 3.
  • More cash on hand can fund bigger bets in sectors like AI. Rivals may need to raise research and development spending to keep up 3.
