Blue Owl leads $2.4b debt deal to fund IREN’s Nvidia chips

IREN, an Australia-based operator of data centers for AI and high-performance computing, said funds managed by Blue Owl Capital led US$2.4 billion in debt financing to buy Nvidia Blackwell Ultra graphics processing units.

The financing will also support an expansion of computing capacity at its Mackenzie data center campus in British Columbia, Canada.

The package includes a US$1.2 billion senior secured term loan and US$1.2 billion in senior secured notes, carrying a 9% interest rate and maturing in two and a half years.

The company says it operates data centers for AI and high-performance computing, after shifting from bitcoin mining.

IREN says Mackenzie is an AI-ready, high-density facility in British Columbia.

The expansion comes as British Columbia proposes rules for AI and data center electricity use, showing the importance of power allocation for large deployments.
