Bitcoin wipes out Trump-era gains as liquidity crunch hits

Bitcoin has declined from its recent highs, losing gains made since the 2024 US presidential election, amid ongoing market volatility.
The cryptocurrency’s price drops are linked to concerns over US Federal Reserve rate policies and liquidity conditions, which have remained tight for months.
Analysts note that reduced liquidity has led to sharper price swings, with Bitcoin falling below US$61,000 last week, its lowest since pre-election.
Market liquidity, measured by average market depth, has decreased from over US$8 million in early 2025 to around US$5 million currently, increasing price sensitivity to small trades.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The recent crypto rout was sparked by a flash crash

  • Analysts linked Bitcoin’s drop to tight liquidity, worries about U.S. Federal Reserve rate policy, and a flash crash on Oct. 10, 2025 1.
  • A U.S. tariff headline described as a 100% China tariff threat set off the plunge, which wiped out more than $19 billion in leveraged crypto positions (trades financed with borrowed money) in about a day 2.
  • As prices fell, market makers (trading firms that continuously quote buy and sell prices) pulled back. Bitcoin’s top-of-book depth (how much can be bought or sold at the best available prices) shrank by more than 90% on major venues, based on intraday order-book data 2.
  • Kaiko (a crypto market data provider) reported that order books on several exchanges got so thin they looked empty for minutes. That added to the swings as forced liquidations jumped 3.
  • Cantor Fitzgerald analysts said part of the broader slide may trace back to 10/10. They added it felt like large holders were forced to sell, and the damage to balance sheets may have been bigger than first thought 1.

The fallout from the crypto crash is a stress test for Wall Street

  • The sell-off exposed weak spots in crypto exchange plumbing. Venue-specific pricing used to value collateral can fuel a margin-driven liquidation spiral (a chain reaction of forced sales as losses trigger more margin calls) 2.
  • That pressure has investors, including those who came in through U.S.-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), digging into exchange risk systems alongside the tokens 2, 1.
  • Some analysts tied the episode to tighter links between crypto and broader markets. They cited crypto volatility as one factor behind moves in the S&P 500 (a major U.S. stock market index) 1.
  • Bloomberg data cited by Fortune says investors pulled billions from the 12 Bitcoin-linked ETFs this month 1.
