Baidu AI chip unit Kunlunxin lines up Hong Kong IPO: sources
Baidu’s AI chip unit Kunlunxin has hired banks for a Hong Kong initial public offering that could raise up to US$2 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
Kunlunxin has reportedly picked China International Capital Corp., Citic Securities Co., and Huatai Securities Co. as lead banks, with China Securities International also working on the offering.
The IPO size may still change, with sources saying the figure could be closer to US$1 billion.
Baidu said Kunlunxin confidentially filed for the IPO last week.
Kunlunxin was set up to support Baidu’s computing needs and is among a small group of Chinese companies designing advanced AI accelerators, a key area as Beijing seeks to reduce reliance on US technology.

JPMorgan expects chip sales to reach RMB 8 billion in 2026 1, a sixfold jump that tests Kunlunxin against Huawei Ascend (Huawei’s line of AI accelerator chips) and Cambricon (a Chinese AI chip designer) 1. Alibaba also competes in the domestic AI chip market 1.
In China, the chips see wide use and fit inference work where steady supply and lower cost beat peak performance for government, telecom, plus state-owned clouds 1. Independent software vendors (ISVs) plus system integrators can win deals by learning the SDK plus Baidu’s PaddlePaddle (an open-source deep learning framework) 2, with PyTorch support and framework compatibility easing adoption as Baidu expands third-party sales 21. The NationalChip partnership (a Chinese chip company focused on edge plus embedded processing) targets edge AI plus automotive systems-on-chip (SoCs) 3. The plan extends reach into smart driving, manufacturing, and highways plus cities 3. Cloud providers plus original equipment manufacturers can map integration within Baidu’s stack spanning chips, frameworks, and foundation models 2. Kunlunxin seeks a domestic ecosystem with Huawei, Cambricon, plus Alibaba 1.
