‘Baby Shark’ creator shares surge 60% after $52m IPO

Shares of The Pinkfong Company, the South Korean firm behind “Baby Shark,” rose over 60% in their debut on the Kosdaq market on November 18.

The stock reached 61,500 won (US$42.40), up from its IPO price of 38,000 won (US$26.20), before settling at 39,600 won (US$27.30).

Pinkfong raised 76 billion won (US$51.8 million) at the top end of its target range.

Pinkfong will use the IPO funds to develop new characters, premium animations, and global pop-up stores.

Founded in 2010 as SmartStudy, Pinkfong is known for producing children’s content including the “Baby Shark” song, which is the most-watched video on YouTube.

The company also developed the animated series Bebefinn, which was launched in 2022 and reached Netflix’s top 10 kids series in the US.

The company produces content across movies, music, mobile apps, games, and merchandise.

  • Shares jumped more than 60% on debut after Pinkfong priced near the top, implying about 545 billion won in value 1. It went from 3.7 billion won profit in 2022 to 3.2 billion won loss in 2023 as revenue slid from 117 billion won to 94.6 billion won 2.
