‘Baby Shark’ creator Pinkfong set for Korea debut after $53m IPO

Pinkfong, the South Korean company known for creating the viral “Baby Shark” song, is set to start trading on the Seoul stock exchange on November 18 after completing its IPO.

The company raised 76 billion won (US$53 million), pricing its shares at the top of the marketed range at 38,000 won each.

Investor demand for the IPO was strong, with orders exceeding 600 times the number of shares available.

Pinkfong’s portfolio includes characters such as Baby Shark, Bebefinn, and Sealook, with several franchises patented by the company.

The firm generates revenue through YouTube, streaming platforms, TV, mobile apps, merchandise, licensing, and live events.

Pinkfong’s IPO comes as Korean entertainment continues to gain global popularity.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pinkfong’s valuation and revenue concentration risks

  • At the 38,000 won IPO price, Pinkfong’s market value reaches 545 billion won 1.
  • Operating profit rose to 18.8 billion won in 2024 from 4 billion in 2023, though margins may fade as the company warns of tougher global content competition 2.
  • No follow-up has matched Baby Shark. Penguin Dance drew 125 million views versus Baby Shark’s 16 billion, which signals dependence on one franchise (heavy reliance on a single hit property) 2.
  • Investors cut valuation hopes from over 1 trillion won in mid-2021 to current levels, so IPO buyers face leftover skepticism 2.

Korean kids intellectual property (IP) going public creates openings for localization, advertising technology (adtech), and licensing intermediaries

  • Overseas markets deliver 76% of revenue across 244 countries with content in 25 languages. That footprint raises demand for kids-safe ad tech, multilingual dubbing, and AI localization such as Pinkfong’s OneVoice (an AI voice-synthesis and dubbing tool) 3.
  • South Korea’s licensing market is growing at ~7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Korean Intellectual Property Office upgrades tighten IP enforcement. The shift opens options for investors, startups, plus platform operators in blockchain royalty tracking or counterfeit-prevention services 4.
  • Global character licensing could reach $224.5 billion by 2033 with Asia Pacific growing at 8.1% CAGR 5. E-commerce and merchandising operators can partner with Korean IP holders that plan international expansion 5.
  • Disney, Hasbro, and Mattel dominate character licensing with big portfolios and steady partnerships 5. That leaves room for specialist agencies plus licensing platforms that plug Korean IP into global retail, streaming, and consumer-products channels 5.
