Apple faces China antitrust complaint over app fees

Forty-eight Chinese iOS developers have filed an antitrust complaint against Apple with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, the country’s market watchdog.

The developers said App Store commissions are unfairly high and that Apple failed to honor a commitment to keep China rates no higher than those in other markets.

The complaint follows earlier legal challenges in China. In a 2021 consumer case, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court found Apple did not abuse its market position.

In its 2024 ruling, the court said Apple’s fees were not significantly higher than those charged by Android app stores and that there was no proof the fees raised consumer prices.

Apple also faces scrutiny in Europe, where it is appealing a 500 million euros (US$573 million) fine over rules that barred developers from steering users to cheaper offers outside the App Store.
