Amazon leads in corporate renewable energy with 33gw projects

Amazon has added 100 new renewable energy projects, bringing its total capacity to over 33 gigawatts, making it the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy.

This positions the company as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, surpassing Apple by more than 10 gigawatts.

The renewable energy portfolio includes utility-scale wind and solar farms, along with on-site solar projects, which can power 8.3 million homes.

These renewable energy contracts have helped reduce Scope 2 emissions, which are related to purchased electricity, despite Amazon’s growth in energy-intensive operations, such as data centers.

Nonetheless, Scope 3 emissions – covering indirect sources like air travel and leased facilities – continue to be a significant challenge in its overall decarbonization strategy.

Amazon aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040, but a detailed update on its progress will be available in the 2024 sustainability report.
