Alibaba pivots to collaboration, AI-driven strategy

Alibaba Group has announced a strategic shift, focusing on collaboration across its business units.

CEO Eddie Wu Yongming outlined in an internal memo on May 9, 2025, that the company will concentrate on “a few core strategic priorities,” which require cooperation among divisions.

This marks a shift from the company’s 2023 restructuring, which split its operations into six groups. An internal website has been launched to improve communication across units.

Alibaba has also revised its previous plans to separate parts of its business. Alibaba Cloud will remain part of the group, and Cainiao has canceled its IPO plans.

The company will now prioritize ecommerce and cloud operations with a “user first, AI-driven” strategy.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Alibaba’s strategic reversal reflects a pendulum swing after years of regulatory challenges

Eddie Wu’s push to break down barriers between business units marks a significant shift from Alibaba’s 2023 restructuring that had separated the company into six distinct groups.

This strategic reversal follows a tumultuous period beginning in 2020 when Jack Ma’s criticism of Chinese regulators led to unprecedented government scrutiny, including a record $2.75 billion antitrust fine and the suspension of Ant Group’s $37 billion IPO1.

The company’s decision to recreate the apartment where Jack Ma founded Alibaba as a pilgrimage site symbolizes more than nostalgia. It represents a deliberate attempt to recapture the innovation and agility that defined its pre-regulatory intervention era.

This restructuring effort suggests that Alibaba is entering a post-crisis stabilization phase after years of government-mandated changes.

The shift back to core businesses aligns with recent financial results showing Alibaba’s gradual recovery, with 8% year-over-year revenue growth and an impressive 83% increase in income from operations for Q4 20242.

2️⃣ Alibaba’s AI investments represent a calculated bet amid broader industry transformation

Wu’s emphasis on an “AI-driven strategy” is backed by substantial investment commitments, with Alibaba planning to invest over RMB 380 billion (approximately $53 billion) in AI and cloud infrastructure over the next three years3.

This AI focus has already shown promising results, with the company reporting triple-digit growth in AI-related products for six consecutive quarters while Alibaba Cloud revenue increased by 13% to RMB 31.74 billion ($4.35 billion)4.
