Akamai nears $250m deal for browser security startup

Akamai Technologies is in advanced talks to buy Israel-based LayerX Security for about US$250 million.

Founded in 2022, LayerX makes browser security software for enterprises and has raised US$45 million from investors including Jump Capital and Dell Technologies Capital.

The startup has more than 80 employees and was founded by CEO Or Eshed and CTO David Weisbrot.

The deal would add to Akamai’s acquisitions in Israel after its purchases of Noname Security for about US$350 million in 2024 and Guardicore for about US$600 million in 2021.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Akamai is buying a browser-first security approach

  • LayerX sells a lightweight browser extension that works inside Chrome or Edge, rather than a separate enterprise browser 1.
  • That setup avoids asking employees to switch software and reduces pushback that comes with replacing familiar tools 2.
  • It goes after enterprise browser vendors such as Island while also fitting alongside Secure Service Edge (SSE), cloud-delivered security tools from companies including Zscaler and Palo Alto Networks Prisma 1.
  • Jump Capital backed LayerX after Jump Trading, a quantitative trading firm, used the product as a customer 1.

The deal moves security closer to the browser

  • Akamai’s interest in LayerX fits a wider shift toward treating the browser as a front line for company security 2.
  • It also lines up with Akamai’s earlier security deals. Its roughly US$600 million purchase of Guardicore centered on micro-segmentation, which limits how attackers move through company networks after getting in 3.
  • LayerX adds protection inside the employee browser session, where older network tools have less control 2.
  • As work relies more on software as a service (SaaS) apps and remote access, browser security has become more important for infrastructure companies that want to keep pace 2.
