AI personal styling startup Alta raises $11m seed funding
AI-powered personal styling platform Alta has secured US$11 million in a seed funding round led by Menlo Ventures.
Founded by Jenny Wang, the New York-based startup offers an AI stylist and personal shopper that provides outfit recommendations and virtual try-ons.
Users can upload their wardrobe by uploading photos, forwarding receipts, or choosing from Alta’s item database.
Alta will use the funding to grow its team, improve its tech, and expand through partnerships with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and global retailers.
The company is also working with public figures and global collaborators as it scales operations in Europe and Oceania.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ From sci-fi to reality: Fashion tech’s 25-year journey to Alta
Alta’s AI stylist app represents the culmination of a decades-long evolution in fashion technology that transformed what was once science fiction into consumer reality.
The iconic computerized closet scene from 1995’s “Clueless” that inspired Alta was pure fantasy when the film debuted, arriving three years before even the first online fashion show by Helmut Lang in 1998, which marked fashion’s initial foray into digital spaces.
Early technological fashion innovations focused primarily on spectacle rather than practical consumer applications, exemplified by Alexander McQueen’s Spring 1999 show featuring robots painting a model’s dress and Hussein Chalayan’s microchip-powered shape-shifting garments in 2007.
The transition to practical AI styling applications began around 2016-2018, when major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba began investing heavily in AI to enhance clothing recommendations and delivery optimization, building the technological foundation that makes personalized styling apps viable today.
This evolution demonstrates how fashion technology typically requires 15-25 years to progress from conceptual demonstrations to mainstream consumer applications, with Alta now attempting to deliver the seamless experience that has been imagined for decades.
2️⃣ Competitive differentiation in the crowded AI styling marketplace
Alta enters a rapidly expanding market of AI styling applications that has seen numerous entrants like Whering, Cladwell, Style DNA, and Acloset develop similar wardrobe management and outfit recommendation capabilities.
The involvement of Michelle Obama’s stylist Meredith Koop in training Alta’s AI represents a strategic advantage, as most competing platforms lack input from high-profile professional stylists, potentially giving Alta’s recommendations more credibility and sophistication.
