More People Watch Funny Videos Than News

viral-videoIf you are a business thinking of creating a video online, a funny video should definitely be in your consideration set. Humor is one of the golden tickets to a viral video, and it is not difficult to understand why.

According to a study by Pew Research Center, there are more people who watched funny videos on the web than those who watched online news. Half of respondents to the center’s survey watched funny videos online, up from 31% in 2007. News was the second most-popular category, with 43% of adults saying they watched such videos, compared with 37% in the earlier survey.

I guess most of us are moving away from the negativity of news to something that can lift our spirits up. The ease of video sharing has also driven the growth in the number of funny videos found online.

One in seven adult internet users (14%) have uploaded a video to the internet, almost double the 8% who were uploading video in 2007. Home video is far and away the most popular content posted online, shared by 62% of video uploaders. And uploaders are just as likely to share video on social networking sites like Facebook (52% do this) as they are on more specialized video-sharing sites like YouTube (49% do this).

What does this mean? If you have a great video, don’t keep it to specialized video sharing sites, share it on multiple platforms!
