Foursquare, Gowalla and SVCNGR are the first movers in location-based mobile apps. They combine social networking with simple badge earning gameplay. But is checking-in and earning badges all we can do? Apparent not.
Korean mobile gaming company YD Online recently launched GEO Hunters a location-based and role playing game (RPG) iPhone app that sets users to fight monster around their location. What’s interesting is that hidden monsters would appear according to world news, making it even more relevant and engaging.
For a start, players can choose to be a warrior, hunter or wizard, fight monsters and compete with other players within the game. You can even gather your own monster army and equip yourself with the best weapons to protect your turf. Your neighbor could turn into a foe as he starts stealing your monsters to boost his own rankings and army of monsters. While busy fighting monsters and competing with other players, it is also important to keep your army of monsters happy. Overall, it is a nice concept combining location-based with RPG.
“Location-based technology has revolutionized game mechanics and GEO Hunters takes this type of experience one step further by using Google Maps to create a fun, addictive gaming environment,” said Dr. Hyun Oh Yoo, CEO of YD Online.
“We wanted to create a mobile game that combines actual geography with fantasy, while creating a community of engaged competitive players. GEO Hunters has all these qualities, giving great replay value to players.”
