Indonesia: The Next Big Thing in Digital Media

If you want to know what’s going on with digital media inIndonesia, you got to check out this video created by 4 students from Singapore Management University (SMU). In a nutshell, the video explained why Indonesia is the next big thing in digital media and went on to share with us 5 big trends in the country.

“The uniqueness of Indonesian culture is fitted to the nature of social media. Indonesians love connecting and with a huge population, we somehow became a huge social media nation. The video is a great way to summarize digital media in Indonesia. The students did a great job,” Andi Primaretha, a social media consultant at Virtual Consulting (Indonesia) commented after watching the video.

Interestingly, William’s start-up, Tokopedia, was also featured in the video as one of the rising online marketplaces. I got to agree. In fact, everything in Indonesia is on a rise, especially the number of start-ups within the country. We are receiving a lot of pitches from Indonesia on a daily basis. It’s a good sign and I know venture capitalists, both from the East and the West, are hunting for the next big thing in Indonesia. Companies like Yahoo (which acquired Koprol) and Multiply are also putting a firm footing in Indonesia. The list of start-ups to watch in Indonesia includes SixReps, Urbanesia, PriceArea and Bukalapak, which generates more than 9 million pageviews per month.

The students also went the extra mile to design an infographic to summarize the content discussed in the video. Enjoy and kudos to SMU students @hicais, @mavechan, @sugerine and @trixiayong and also professor Michael Netzley for building this wiki with the students.

Note: I heard some companies are interested to hire the student for creative design work.

Great video. However, I don’t know about “e-commerce is taking off” using internet explorer logo is appropriate since IE is kinda lagging compared to the other browsers. Even though I have to say IE 9 looks nice (ignoring the fact that it looks like Chrome). =)

Willis Wee says:
