Public Interest Registry (PIR), the manager of .ORG, has announced that it will be waiving renewal fees for Japan-based .ORGs which could unintentionally expire between the dates of March 11 (the date of the tragic earthquake) and June 11, 2011. At the time of writing there are 17 participating registrars (listed in the table below) who have committed to providing free one-year renewals.
It’s likely that many businesses in affected areas of Japan were unable to renew due to a lack of power or because of direct damage caused by the quake or tsunami. Many computers have sustained water damage and data-recovery services will surely be kept very busy. Indeed 80% of companies surveyed by Teikoku Databank said their business was or would be affected.
It’s good to see organizations step up for Japan like this, even if it is just a little. All business and technology news aside, the people in Tohoku will still need a lot more help getting back on their feet especially as much of the money being donated to the Red Cross was delayed in getting distributed to affected areas.
