China’s Silicon Valley and 49 Asian Tech Stories You May Have Missed

zhongguancunLast week, Zhongguancun, China’s Silicon Valley had its plan approved for major changes as it aims to boost its total revenue to $1.54 trillion by 2020. It’s yet another sign that China is indeed uprising. Tencent bought shares in Huayi Brothers media to strengthen its video content strategy, though, it wasn’t revealed how the two would collaborate. Alibaba Group also confirmed with us the acquisition of CNZZ, a traffic stats company.

Baidu claimed second in the area of brand valuation growth in Millward Brown’s Global Brand Rankings. Details on a possible Baidu and Microsoft partnership will be released soon too. Baidu’s search engine revenue continues to rise in China. Sina Weibo reached 140 million users. Gaopeng suffered an iPhone giveaway backlash last week.

On India, we wrote about Indiatimes’ newly launched SMS-based mobile browser, how social media is becoming an important channel for India, and also an infographic which captured the highlights on India’s mobile industry.

Social media is huge in Indonesia, so huge that it turned into a documentary. That was regardless of Indonesia’s low computer literacy rate which took a lift, thanks to Ubuntu. The white iPhone 4 was finally unveiled in Indonesia through XL and Telkomsel. Indonesia also has its very first Internet only TV channel. Indomie a popular instant noodle in Indonesia turned into a rap song on YouTube which is well-loved by Indonesians.

LinkedIn is coming to Japan. The country had also gotten itself a Japanese guide for Facebook. Docomo will also include Twitter features in its upcoming smartphones and feature phones according to an agreement made last week.
